they've got a lot of stuff. i just wish some of it were shelled peanuts. the nice employee had hope that they did though. cash only, which is kinda annoying for a market. and uh, the beer is priced ok. borrrrrrinngggg.
Looking at the reviews of K & D Market as of today, 3/21/08, they aren't too pretty. Looks like there are various reasons for this, and I'm sure these ratings are rooted in legitimate concerns. But I'm going to drop 5 stars on this review. In my opinion, a key question to consider when deciding what businesses to support is how socially responsible are they? Especially for this type of business. I mean we think all liquor stores are pretty much the same. They sell the same stuff. We choose them based on proximity and convenience. BUT, if I knew that there was one liquor store who was investing in environmental practices, more than any of its competitors, I would choose to shop at that store. Honestly I don't care about customer service in a liquor store. In light of the climate crisis, what I care about much more is which business is helping to mitigate the climate crisis, and which is not?
I'm starting an organization called Carrotmob (www.carrotmob.org/miss...), and in planning our first campaign we have found that this store is willing to invest more in upgrading their refrigeration and lighting than any other store. I'm not saying they are saints who are doing this out of good fuzzy feelings. It should be a profitable choice for them. What I am saying is that numbers don't lie. On March 29th at 1pm, we're going to get a mob of people to buy stuff, and they're going to set aside 22% of all the revenue we bring in for environmental measures. That, to me, is way more important than any other factor when choosing where to buy my gin and juice.
To correct the record, Danny, the guy referenced by many of the prior reviews is the store's long-time manager, NOT the owner. I've gotten to know the owner's son David who recently moved out from DC and started working there, and he is a great guy. I like to think of this campaign as a turning point in the number of stars this store is going to be getting on Yelp in the future. That's my 2 cents at least. Give it up!

Every time I have been inside this store the owner has been inordinately rude to someone. Rude like it's too much to ask of him to take my money in exchange for his lackluster goods. Rude like I'm some derelict off the streets trying to shoplift.
Rude, Rude, Rude.
One extra star for the convenience of being almost across the street from my friends' street but I honestly dread coming here.

Regardless of the expiration dates on their cereal (it's a bodega dudes, chill out) this place gets five stars from me because they were the first ever business to host the Carrot Mob! Check it out at www.carrotmob.org. At least they care about changing their ways, and making this particular establishment a little bit more environmentally friendly. Boo yah.
When given a choice of where to buy my beer (decent selection here) and organic peanut butter (they recently sold out), I will always choose the business that cares about doing a little good.
Not the best selection of stuff if you have to live nearby and rely on it for 'emergency necessities'. But, if you are drunk & need a bag of chips or are on the way home after the bar closes and you have to get one last case of booze, well then, K&D is a Godsend.

So when I first started living in the area I thought that Danny hated me... but now and then, he cracks a smile. One of the best things about him is that he shares my serious dislike of change, specifically pennies. He always rounds up my change so that I don't have a bunch of pennies in my pocket/purse/wallet. Gotta love that.
The lady who works during the day always has to tell me what new ice creams they have, and then goes on to say that it doesn't really matter because her favorite is Haagen Daz Sticky Toffee Pudding. That made me add the fourth star, because it's my favorite too.

this place has many nicknames... none of which are suitable for this g-rated website. The much maligned owner deserves his reputation, and I will vouch he is a nasty lying landlord as well. He has been a most unfriendly greedy pig presence on 16th for decades, and I'll never forgive or forget his ruining one particular sunny Saturday afternoon in the late 80's. He was violently searching & threatening a young woman and accusing her of stealing some toothpaste she had purchased at Rainbow. Sadly, he didn't realize in his rage that he did not even carry that brand...It was "Tom's of Maine" not the usual substandard crap that lines his dusty depressing mouse turd lined aisles...SAD! I haven't spent a dime there since, and advise you do the same...

We just forgot some ice cream in an order we placed with room-mates. Luckily we're in good with Danny at the K & D. We put in a call on this idle Tuesday; the old dude picked-up and put us through. Now, if you haven't met him before you know he's in charge when you get there... He'll be yelling at you about how it's inhuman to go #2 in the streets, admonish ya' for buying cigarettes, or do some crazy jiu jitsu move to your gut -- but it's all in good fun. If you're in a rush, not feeling talkative, or in the mood for name-calling, just skip down to the Val 16 and get your ears yelled off by the annoying fat lady... give Danny the rest he deserves.

I'm sure the guy who runs this place has to frequently deal with drunk a-holes and crackheads, but I don't like getting the constant stink-eye, and being treated like a criminal.
The woman who works there is nice. Once she let me buy the sunday paper even though I was five cents short (yes, I'm pathetic, I know).
I'd give K&D no stars at all if this site would allow it. One of my least favorite places in the neighborhood. No concept of customer service, neighbor relations or good business sense. Like I can't walk 50 feet and buy any of this crap elsewhere? I send all of my customers to Val 16 on the corner of 16th and Valencia, where they are friendly, tri-lingual and sell everything and more than you can get at this "waste of space". I hope someday we get a local business in that location that adds value to the neighborhood.

My personal experience with this place has been really good, and I frequent this store almost daily since I live nearby.
Sure, the owner guy can kind of be a jerk, but he's really nice once you develop a rapport with him. His name's Danny and he's been running that store for years, and he even used to own the now defunct Dr. Bombay's bar (which is now "Cama", ick!) accross the street. I think he's just a little crazy...probably from managing a liquor store in the Mission! I've seen him chase a thief from his store once or twice myself, but shit, if someone stole from me, I'd wanna go after them too.
Their prices on cigarettes are reasonable, and they have an decent selection of beer and wine too. They also have just about every flavor of Ben and Jerry's ice cream!
Fours stars because Danny sometimes starts telling stories (usually involving his stint in the Korean Army) to me when I'm in a rush.

It doesn't really need a review - either you are at 16th and Guerrero wanting to buy liquor, or not. But, they do have one of the wider selections of ice cream treats I have seen in the Mission, and many kinds of beer.
The owner/counter manager is a jerk. He acts like he is doing you a favor by selling you cigarettes. Once, I saw him chase a customer out of the store, yelling. They sell 6-packs of beer but they fabricate the cardboard six-pack holders themselves using tape and staples! Bizarre. Beware.

Food archivists. The museum of expired cereal. I'm pretty sure Danny hates everyone, including me.
